Nitrogen isotope composition of inorganic soil nitrogen and associated vegetation under a sea bird colony on the Hatana islands, Rotuma Group, Fiji

چکیده
Concentration together with the stable isotope composition (δ15N) of both ammoniumand nitrate-nitrogen were conducted for sedentary soils under the piscivorous seabird colony developed on Quaternary basaltic ejecta from the Hatana islands, Fiji, south Pacific. Higher inorganic nitrogen content (up to 2,420 mg-N/kg dry soil) was observed for soils under dense forest vegetation, relative to a lower nitrogen content for soils under sparse grass vegetation (270 mg-N/kg dry soil), reflecting the difference in the mulching effects of vegetative cover for leaching of nitrogen by meteoric water. Active mineralization of uric acid in the bird excreta followed by partial loss due to volatilization of ammonia, nitrification and denitrification were indicated by unique δ15N values of the inorganic nitrogen as high as +50‰. This unique process was facilitated by high soil surface temperature (24 to 32°C) in combination with the humid tropical climate (annual rainfall: 3560 mm). Distinct isotopic composition of the foliar nitrogen (δ15N = +13.6 to +36.7‰) indicated acquisition of the inorganic nitrogen derived from bird excreta in soils.

Differential Responses of Arctic Vegetation to Nutrient Enrichment by Plankton- and Fish-Eating Colonial Seabirds in Spitsbergen
The role of seabirds as sea-land biovectors of nutrients is well documented. However, no studies have examined whether and how colonial seabirds that differ in diet may influence terrestrial vegetation. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to describe and compare plant communities located in the vicinity of the two most common types of seabird colonies in Arctic, occupied by piscivorous or p...

Grazing effect on vegetation cover and soil factors in natural environments is inevitable. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of grazing on soil factors and distribution of plant species in grazed and non-grazed areas in rangelands of western parts of Hoz-e-Soltan Lake, Qom. Systematic-randomized sampling method was used alongside of 4 transects. Adjacent to the transects...
متن کاملTree Plantation Systems Influence Nitrogen Retention and the Abundance of Nitrogen Functional Genes in the Solomon Islands
Tree mono-plantations are susceptible to soil nutrient impoverishment and mixed species plantations have been proposed as a way of maintaining soil fertility while enhancing biodiversity. In the Solomon Islands, mixed species plantations where teak (Tectona grandis) is inter-planted with a local tree species (Flueggea flexuosa) have been used as an alternative to teak mono-plantations and are e...
متن کاملSeabird Guano Fertilizes Baltic Sea Littoral Food Webs
Nutrient enrichment in coastal marine systems can have profound impacts on trophic networks. In the Baltic Sea, the population of Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) has increased nearly exponentially since the mid-1990 s, and colonies of these seabirds can be important sources of nitrogen enrichment for nearby benthic communities due to guano runoff. In this study we used stable iso...
متن کاملWading bird guano enrichment of soil nutrients in tree islands of the Florida Everglades.
Differential distribution of nutrients within an ecosystem can offer insight of ecological and physical processes that are otherwise unclear. This study was conducted to determine if enrichment of phosphorus (P) in tree island soils of the Florida Everglades can be explained by bird guano deposition. Concentrations of total carbon, nitrogen (N), and P, and N stable isotope ratio (δ(15)N) were d...
